Man’s Best Friend

The time that we are walking through is one of the most challenging seasons of life that anyone has seen. Thus, we find ourselves as a society where we find ourselves alone. For those of us who have pets, we seem to hold more weight on companionship through them since we do not get as much human interaction.

While this idea that pets help us cope with isolation and loneliness is one that is valid and used often. (For clarification I have been spending all this isolation time with my cat Stormy.) I think that there is an idea that we can lose in this time of crisis. When we think about the concept of man’s best friend, our pet is our closest form of companionship that we have. But to what length will we continue to accept a finite companionship when there is eternal companionship to be found.

I think that something that we tend to forget is that temporal companionship will only last on this side of eternity. Especially in this time when we are getting pushed in a way that leads us to having less of that type of companionship. The idea that I want to expound on is that while companionship is good on this side of eternity, we also live on the other side of the cross of Christ, and that gives us a perfect friend.

My best friend is Jesus Christ. He has done a beautiful thing for all of society. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says…

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

The beautiful part about this verse is that God made the sacrifice for the sins that we committed. Now as this man walked through the life he lived; he was tempted in every single way. So that in his death, us sinners are able to strive to live the way that our loving friend did.

This sacrifice is much better than anything this side of heaven can make. Now while I talked about the isolation that we are feeling currently. I am confident that we are all living in the reality that we much rather rely on the temporal companionship instead of looking to the eternal sacrifice that was made for us. In saying all this, I hope it pushes you to take a honest assessment of the way you are reacting to this “new normal” and submit to the king!
